Stealing from the Wildlife...

Posted by onepanwonders on September 14, 2009 at 9:48 AM

One of the things I love most about the end of summer is the abundance of berries it provides me. Lately I've been picking and freezing all of the blackberries just outside my door at work. Big fat black juicy berries. Yum!

Someone once told me that picking wild berries was "stealing from the wildlife" and I have to completely disagree. Not only can I not get to (by foot, wing or otherwise) all of the berries that the animals and birds can, the best berries are usually way out of my reach. When harvesting along the trail, I don't leave the trail. There are plenty more berries just 2 or 3 feet off the trail. Plenty for everyone!

The blackberry bush for example... I could see these huge juice berries hanging way over my head, but alas, they had to be 10 feet up. I'll be leaving those for the birds. A lot of berries were just rotting/molding away on the vines too. In the hot sun, it gave a vinegary/wine scent to the air. Ahhh... summer. Reminds me of being a kid and making "forts" in the blackberry bushes near our house.

I am going to learn how to make jam this year, but I think I have enough berries to make some fruit leathers as well. Stay tuned... More berry goodness coming your way!
