Backpacking food does not need to be expensive, nor does it have to taste like cardboard. You can eat delicious meals in the backcountry without too much effort and you can do it in ONE PAN!
I got tired of backpacking cookbooks that required special ingredients or the use of a dehydrator. Yes, dehydrators are useful and the results are convenient, especially for things that you can't find in a dehydrated form. I have a lot of fun with mine. BUT, I am convinced there is another way to have delicious meals without a lot of work.
I don't have a problem with a slightly heavier pack. My pack will be lighter on the way out and I'll eat very well in camp. Let's face it, as much as we'd like to, most of us aren't doing multi-week (or month!) treks.
If you are only going for a couple of nights, why not eat a wonderful backpacking meal?
By using ingredients that can be found in most local grocery stores, and with a little preparation at home, you can eat "gourmet" meals when backpacking. Your hiking buddies will be drooling.
